President Gur Alroey and senior leaders from the Africa Division and the Israeli Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the opening event of the International MA Program in Education and Development in Early Childhood. The event, celebrating the program’s tenth anniversary, took place at the Gallery of African Studies in Tel Aviv. The program enjoys ongoing support from long-time university benefactors, Hon. Dr. Ora Stibbe and Eytan Stibbe.
Under the leadership of Professors Yair Ziv and Avi Sagi-Schwartz, the program resumed with vigor after a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It continues to fulfill its mission of improving the quality of life and well-being of young children, particularly those in developing countries, through interdisciplinary training and the development of professional leadership in early childhood education. The program attracts students from diverse professional backgrounds—including education, psychology, social work, law, nursing, medicine, and public health—who are all committed to becoming agents of change.
Despite the ongoing challenges marked by the October 7th atrocities and the ensuing war, the program welcomed 20 students from 17 countries, selected from nearly 200 applicants. These students have demonstrated resilience, continuing their studies even under the threat of rocket and missile attacks in Haifa, showcasing the formidable spirit that defines the Israeli populace.
The event featured speeches from notable attendees such as the Ambassador of Ethiopia, representing the diplomatic corps in Israel, and Wamweru Muthara, a student from Kenya speaking on behalf of the cohort. In her compelling address, Muthara shared personal stories of how education served as a lifeline out of poverty for her and her peers. She emphasized, “Our cohort comprises men and women with incredible stories and diverse backgrounds…. [We all share the same] purpose: To help create a better world for children. Your investment in us is an investment in the children at the heart of our communities.”
During the event, Eytan Stibbe, who traveled to space two years ago to collect scientific data, personally conducted tours of an adjacent space exhibition. The exhibition showcased the extensive materials gathered during his mission.
This annual event not only highlights the program’s global impact but also celebrates the personal achievements and aspirations of its participants, reinforcing the university’s commitment to fostering educational advancements that extend beyond borders.
