University of Haifa Rolls Out a New Initiative to Foster Unity and Resilience in a Diverse Campus Amid War
Dear Friends,
The 2023-24 academic year opened on December 31, 2023, two months after its initial start date due to the outbreak of the “Swords of Iron” war against Hamas. Amidst the profound grief over the significant loss of lives, we grappled with challenges arising from escalated tensions on social media between Jewish and Arab students, posing a threat to the harmonious atmosphere of our otherwise peaceful campus.
Our immediate priority is to instill a sense of security and an environment of inclusion for all: From those who bravely served on the frontlines with the IDF, to young mothers who have selflessly cared for their children alone; displaced students from conflict zones, and Arab students who face distinctive challenges in expressing themselves on campus.
In response to these unprecedented challenges, the University is implementing three transformative initiatives led by the newly established Division for Diversity, Inclusion and Community:
Shared Society Trustees:We are forming a team within the student body, serving as visible security ambassadors to enhance safety across campus.
Arab-Jewish Student Leadership:Proactively fostering shared experiences and meaningful dialogues between Jewish and Arab students within each academic department to strengthen bonds and understanding.
Tailor-Made Support Programs for Faculty Members:Implementing customized training sessions and workshops to equip faculty with tools to navigate specific challenges within their departments.
The University of Haifa remains steadfast in its mission to empower students through lifelong learning and professional growth, fostering social responsibility and intercultural understanding, as they embark on a fulfilling academic journey towards impactful careers and responsible citizenship.
As we usher in 2024 our collective wish is for a New Year marked by unity, understanding, shared learning and collective efforts to create a better world.
Sincerely,
Prof. Ron Robin President
Prof. Gur Alroey Rector
Prof. Mouna Maroun VP and Dean of Research and Development
