Israel must prepare for extreme heatwave and wildfires, say UofH experts

CLIMATE CHANGE:
Dr. Avi Bar-Massada (Department of Biology and Environment at University of Haifa at Oranim), a global leader in fire research, warns that the extreme heatwave experienced in southern Europe, which has seen temperatures soaring past 107°F (42°C), only stands to get worse. The region is also experiencing raging wildfires, consuming thousands of acres of land in France, Portugal and Spain. He explains, “At events like this, when everything is dry, the trees dry out and all it takes is one tiny spark to light a fire.” Prof. Emeritus Haim Kutiel (Department of Geography and Environmental Studies) predicts that these events are the result of global climate change and will become more frequent and extreme, especially in the Mediterranean basin and other areas on the continent.
